Christus Victor
More scorned and scarred than when He came A pinned exhibit on a tree The Son of Heaven and Lord of earth Divorced from both in agony Cut off from God by human sin Abandoned by His frightened friends Love’s final tender Word, on whom Creation’s every breath depends
So cold the nails that pierce His hands Tear skin and bones and worlds apart Sin-poisoned thorns and shocking spear Which probe and test and break His heart. None sharper than the mocking tongues Which praise then raise then bring Him down Barbs guilty shame and fear have formed Hate-woven in a cruel crown
The struggle done, blood stops, doubts flow; Wan, wondering spectators leave And Pharisees to worship go Few care, none knows what to believe. What fight this single scout has fought! What prize is won, what crimes He’ll clear! Rich ransoms this poor King has bought, Who dies in lonely exile here.

Once lovely
And for His Head? A crown of thorns; mocking, corrupt and cruel. We’ll lift Him high, abruptly bring Him down, Show this perfect King to be a fool!
The heart of mercy tried, tested; spear gash through His side, probing for blood.
Has death prevailed? Is truth to be denied? (His subject-masters gambling for His robe) Is grace to be exhausted, love defied? Hands - that led the dead back into life, that soothed the sisters’ grief, wiped woes away and lighted sightless eyes - now carve consummate relief.
They jerk, embrace the nail iron, grasp the air. Knees (often bent in prayer All night they’d wait) no longer bend, but stiffly bear the untold weight of innocent perfection - filled with sin.
Once lovely on the mountains, dancing, winged, songbird feet proclaiming Jubilee, flinging release to the captives, becoming pinned, a still-mounted exhibition. Stigmata of eternity’s willing slave.
What shall the sign read? Just His name and His pretense to lead. What fool would follow in His bloody steps, who scattered word as seed and leaves more scorned and scarred than when He came?
